While surfing the internet this morning, I decided to look up the meaning of the word “empowerment”. We often feel we know, are aware, and conscious of words we use until we actually learn what they actually mean.

I stumbled on a number of websites sharing insights into what the word “empowerment “ means but I fell in love with this one by the Journal of Extension (JOE) which defines empowerment as “a process that challenges our assumptions about the way things are and can be. It challenges our basic assumptions about power, helping, achieving, and succeeding.”

There are many definitions given to empowerment and many understandings to it but the underlying factor is that the core concept of empowerment is power. Giving a deeper look at the definition suggested by JOE, one realizes that there is more to empowerment than the usual use of the term.

Empowerment is about challenging our minds, giving us the ability to think, believe and know that we have the power to change the things that we see and live. Empowerment is about working your imagination and thoughts into visualizing a better future with opportunities wherein you can be different and help you bring that vision to reality.

Empowerment is a whole concept that can take years and years of book writing to digest. But I hope this right here was able to give you a better understanding of what it really means to empower. So when next you use this word, use it properly!
